I have been a multi-level marketing (MLM) distributor for 15 years! That is a LONG time in this business. I have mostly been a wholesale customer, but I am a licensed distributor. I LOVE my products and have used them religiously since Day One. I love my company and I am extremely loyal.
I tried to “work” the business a few times. I talked to my friends and family, put fliers on cars, pounded signs in the ground, talked to grocery store clerks and waitresses. And I was miserable every second! Even when people did call me back and I signed them up, I was always holding my breath. Would they actually agree to do fliers? How many would they do before angry store owners or car owners called them? How much money would they spend on signs before they realized how long it took to put 50 in the ground? Or again, until city officials started calling, complaining about signs on telephone poles? Don’t get me wrong. I had some great times! I did some very goofy, off the wall things that are fun to look back on and laugh about! I met inspiring, hard working, warm-hearted people trying to find better ways to take care of their families and their futures. They just wouldn’t stick with the business very long and it wasn’t because they were quitters or because they didn’t want it bad enough. For one thing, they went broke trying to advertise before they had enough residual income coming in to help pay for it all. And we did cheap advertising! Calling all their center of influence and putting out fliers?!? It doesn’t get much cheaper than that!
There were 3 main reasons my distributors did not work at their MLM businesses for very long.
1. Dwindling funds.
2. Lack of professionalism of marketing methods.
3. Lack of time (when people had jobs, after warm market was exhausted, doing 1000 fliers/100 signs, etc.)
Ann Sieg addresses these problems (and more) with real solutions in her popular online ebook “The Renegade Network Marketer.” When I found Ann’s book, I was not looking for solutions to my old MLM problems. I was looking for plane tickets to Jamaica! Go figure. I came across a travel MLM webpage and was using it to search for cheaper flights. As a travel director by profession, I started looking into the company and wondered if I could use it professionally and for my family for reduced airfare and hotels. Ann Sieg had an ad on a Google search page. That led me to her infamous “The 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing” free report. I was fascinated. She had personally experienced all the roadblocks–mental, physical, monetary–that I had. You can tell when you read her report. She’s not just guessing at someone’s pain. She knows it personally and intimately. It’s easy to relate to that.
A colleague of mine said Ann’s “7 Great Lies” report was too negative about MLM to send prospects to read. When 97% of people who join an MLM company fail, MLM is somewhat negative! That is a BIG number! Like me, some people out there have negative feelings about the experience! However, Ann is so effective because she doesn’t stop there. In the Renegade Network Marketer book, she offers real solutions to these problems.
Take one of these problems, for example, dwindling cash flow for someone trying to start a business. I, and others out there, am so loyal to my MLM company, it’s almost blasphemous to think of earning money off something else. So what ends up happening? Distributors keep or get a job to support their MLM business or quit the MLM completely and just work a full time job. Ann teaches the benefits of affiliate marketing and earning multiple streams of income. Why not have other income coming in? It complements your MLM business and keeps you from either quitting your business altogether or working for someone else at a business that most likely DOES NOT complement your MLM business. In most of my previous jobs, it was illegal–grounds for getting fired–to talk about my MLM! How is that preferable to promoting a couple other products online that will complement your business and/or products, help your downline, and keep you in business?
That’s only one example and Ann goes into in-depth. Ann’s book is full of revolutionary ideas for network marketing today. It is a MUST for anyone in an MLM or network marketing business. Attraction and affiliate marketing are where the entire industry is headed. I am so excited that I found Ann’s report and book and that I am at the front of the new internet attraction marketing trend. Representatives at the very top of MLM companies today can possibly maintain their incomes by the sheer volume of their downlines. (I do know someone at the top level of his company that couldn’t maintain his income using old methods). Anyone coming into MLM today, however, will not have a chance of developing a business using the old methods of recruiting and marketing. Internet marketing and attraction marketing are NECESSITIES for today’s independent entrepreneurs.

Kari,
I liked your article very much! Earning multiple streams of income instead of relying on our mlm business is definitely the way to go. Ann’s book is a breath of fresh air. It’s the “new-fashioned” way of doing business!
