6 Tips if You’re Afraid of Talking to People about Network Marketing

Are you afraid of talking to people about network marketing?Are you afraid of talking to people about network marketing?

Are you struggling in your business because you’re afraid of talking to people about network marketing? This business is all about talking to people, so I’ll give you a few tips to get comfortable with it.

There are a few different strategies to help you ease this fear. Understand why you’re nervous and what you can do about it. Use mind games to help boost your confidence. Finally, push through the fear and do it anyway. I’m not going to lie. You’re going to be uncomfortable, but these tips will make it easier.

1. Posture

Have you heard of posture? I’m not talking about putting your shoulders back, though that’s good, too. Ha, ha. Posture is your belief in what you have to offer, regardless of outside approval or acceptance. I know you believe in the network marketing or direct sales industry or you wouldn’t be reading this. You have a gift and want to share it with people. I know you believe in your products or service. (If not, time to find a new company!) Remember those beliefs, regardless of what other people say or do. Have posture.

2. Your Belief

Why do you believe in network marketing as a business model? Why do you love it? Reconnecting with these reasons will improve your posture. Do you know you can make money – because you’ve seen other people do it or because you’ve made money? Have you seen people change their lives because of the money and freedom? Do you know this business can help others – have extra money, have more time freedom, or get out of a job they hate?

I love the network marketing industry because it introduced me to personal development. I’ve been working on myself since I joined the industry over 20 years ago. I teach my kids to work on themselves, take responsibility, and not blame others for their problems. That’s generational impact. I also know it works because I make money when I sell products or bring in teammates. How much we make is only a matter of how many people we help and serve.

3. You’re Only Looking for a Few

Remember this phrase:

You aren’t right for everyone and everyone isn’t right for you.

Stated another way:

Some will. Some won’t. Who cares? Who’s next?

Everyone isn’t right for your business! Don’t recruit everyone. You don’t want everyone. You don’t want whiners, broke thinkers, or people who can’t make a decision. Be willing to turn people down. Don’t be affected when someone says no to you, either. It’s not right for them. Move on to the next contact, phone call, or presentation as soon as possible.

4. Get Pumped Up

Do what it takes to get your attitude in the right place. If you’re afraid of talking to people about network marketing, put on some awesome music that pumps you up and makes you feel like you can DO ANYTHING, before you reach out to people or pick up the phone. I have a friend who used to slam beers before his phone calls. Yikes! I don’t recommend that, but he has a multi-million dollar business now, so… do whatever it takes.

I like to watch a quick snippet of a training video to remind me what I’m doing and WHY. Why am I reaching out to people today? To make connections. To fill the funnel. I don’t have to close anyone. Just reach out.

5. Remember Your Why

Why are you doing this business? What is your desired outcome? What will you do to achieve your goals if you don’t do network marketing? What will happen if you don’t take action today? There’s a reason everyone tells you to write down your why and read it often. Network marketing may be the only way you have to achieve big goals. Most of us won’t do it being an employee. We have to do something different to get different results.

6. Do It Anyway

When it comes down to it, you have to feel the fear and do it anyway. The fear isn’t going to go away, not completely. Be ok with being nervous, then take action. When I was at a network marketing event years ago, I asked Ray Higdon about this. I said, “I’m so afraid of talking to people about network marketing. I have the belief in my company and in the industry, but I can’t pick up the phone.” He said, “You have to do it scared. Leaders have fear. They just don’t let that stop them.”

My daughter has been playing soccer for 10 years. She still gets nervous before her soccer games. She knows how to play. She has the skills, but she wants to do her best. There are unknown elements. How will the other team play? Who will she go up against?

What if, when she was 8, she told me she was nervous and I said, “Then you shouldn’t play. Wait until tomorrow. You’ll be less nervous tomorrow.” Guess what? She wouldn’t still be playing soccer. She would have quit by now if I let her sit out every time she felt nervous.

You’re going to be nervous. The only way to get better is to take action. With action, comes confidence. Take steps every day to keep pushing back the fear, getting more skills, and growing your confidence.

I wish I could tell you the fear goes away. “Once you talk to 100 people, you will be a master and you’ll be totally confident every time.” No, it doesn’t work like that. Maybe after talking to 1,000 people or 10,000 people. But then you’ll be nervous about something else, right?

This is Just the Beginning

If you’re in network marketing or direct sales, you like a challenge. You like personal growth. You aren’t going to grow a big team, then stop growing. You’ll always be working on something new — something challenging — something that makes you nervous. You’ll have to learn to push through that fear, too, and keep growing.

Think of your fear about talking to people as just one step on the journey. Keep taking steps and you’ll keep growing – your mind, your skills, your income, and your life.
